  3. Since his translation to Cardiff, I’ve rather lost touch, but what I hear is unremarkable but good. He has spoken well on moral issues for the BBC, and the Archdiocese seem content.

  4. One highway that ends in California is the most famous of all Route 66, created in 1926 as one of the first numbered highways. Before then, American roads were recognised by coloured bands on telegraph poles and were often maintained by private individuals. Originally stretching 2,451 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, Route 66 has lost sections to state roads, local roads, private drives and grass, and dwindled to a series of discontinuous “historic” byways. Some stretches remain open, most notably the 320-mile south-western Arizona section from the Petrified Forest to Kingman, via Winslow and Flagstaff stay en route at the atmospheric La Posada hotel, where the 66 meets the equally celebrated Santa Fe railroad. To see whats open and viable, see historic66.com and check 66in2weeks.com to work out distances.

  5. Stop Press: An ITV News/Independent/ComRes poll out tonight has the Conservatives on 35 per cent (-1), Labour at 29 per cent (-2) and the Lib Dems at 21 per cent (+2). Not such good news for the Tories, but according to and UkPollingReport, the fieldwork was mainly done before the Conservative manifesto launch. ITV’s News at Ten certainly concealed that fact when publicising the poll tonight, claiming it was “bad news” for those who think the public pay attention to manifestos.

As France pulls out of the recession alongside other European countries, older English couples are selling up and new Francophiles are moving in. Knight Frank says sales in Gascony have doubled since last year and inquiry levels this summer have been 35 per cent higher than last. “Over the last five or six years the market has come down a lot, by around 40 per cent in some parts,” says Matthew Hodder-Williams, in charge of south-west France at Knight Frank.

  8. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is scheduled to hold a vote on Saturday on a measure giving a one-year debt ceiling increase without conditions. It is expected to be opposed by Senate Republicans. The chamber may then move quickly on a shorter time frame, even if it is not Democrats’ first choice.
